A Loudoun County public defender who was charged last spring with shoplifting an energy drink from a Winchester grocery store has pleaded guilty to trespassing.
Lorie E. O’Donnell was arrested March 2 after a security guard saw her place a can of Red Bull into her purse and proceed through the checkout line without paying for the beverage.
Last month, O’Donnell was permitted to plead guilty to an amended charge of trespassing, rather than shoplifting, The Washington Post reports. She was ordered to pay a $500 fine and $84 in court costs.
Because trespassing is not a crime of “moral turpitude,” the conviction could allow O’Donnell to avoid problems with the Virginia State Bar and keep her law license.
O’Donnell will remain the chief public defender in Loudoun, Fauquier and Rappahannock counties, according to the Post.
