The Commission on Judicial Selection has named three finalists for the bench in the 10th Judicial District. They are Bridgid Dowdal, Walter Kaminsky and Matthew Staehling.
The vacancy was created upon the death of Judge Robert Varco. It will be chambered in Elk River.
Dowdal is the chief legal councel for the office of inspector general at the Minnesota Department of Human Services. She previously served as Assistant Dean at the William Mitchell College of Law, as partner at the law firm of Dowdal & Dowdal, PLC, as an Assistant United States Attorney and as a trial attorney at the United States Department of Justice. Dowdal has been a member of the Minnesota Supreme Court Historical Society and the Minnesota Women Lawyers Leadership Award Selection Committee.
Kaminsky practices personal injury litigation and criminal defense at Lindell and Lavoie. Prior to this, he served as Sherburne County Attorney and was a partner with Terpstra, Black, Brandell, Kaminsky, & Hoffman. Kaminsky has been a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Professionalism Committee, Minnesota Association for Justice, and was a volunteer attorney with Central MN Legal Services.
Staehling is the city attorney for St. Cloud, where he practices general civil/municipal law and serves as the legal advisor for City Administration and the City Council. Previously, he was as the assistant city attorney for St. Cloud and an attorney at Magnuson Law Firm. Staehling has also served as the Assistant Staff Judge Advocate for the Minnesota Army National Guard – 34th Infantry “Red Bull” Division. Staehling has been a member of the Minnesota Association of City Attorneys and the Stearns-Benton Bar Association.
Vacancies in 1st and 3rd Districts
The commission is accepting applications for vacancies in the 1st and 3rd Judicial Districts.
In the !st District, the opening is for the seat formerly held by Judge Michael Sovis in Dakota County, who has retired. In the 3rd District, Judge Joseph Weiners has retired, leaving a vacancy in Rochester.
