David Lillehaug has throat cancer

Incoming Minnesota Supreme Court Justice David Lillehaug announced today that he has throat cancer. He said he learned of the diagnosis but said it is “highly curable.”

He still plans to start work on the court Monday morning.

Gov. Mark Dayton named Lillehaug to replace Justice Paul Anderson in March. Lillehaug said he shared the news with Dayton and Chief Justice Lorie Gildea who are both supportive of his plan.

His formal investiture is scheduled for late June.

In a statement Lillehaug said he expects to participate fully in the court’s work during his treatment.

My doctors at the nationally renowned Virginia Piper Institute, part of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, are preparing a seven-week non-surgical treatment plan to start in mid-June. All agree that this development will not prevent me from serving as an associate justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court.
